Inside page designs
I like to design in a classic format. Several hundred years of
experimentation have shown us a great deal about what works and
what doesn't. This doesn't mean that your book must be designed
this way but it is a good place to start. I've included several
examples of different design approaches.
It's
ironic that the layout and typography in a well
designed book is unnoticeable. People will say
that every turn of the page was interesting and
the words flowed off the page, and this could
be entirely due to the quality of your writing.
However if the text is full of awkward paragraph
breaks that make it difficult to follow to the
next page and looks like the printer made cutting
mistakes with the text too deep in the gutter
or close to the page edge, the reader will know.
Text set too solid, or too small, or with lines
too long can be tiring to read, and your reader
will know.
These examples should give you an idea of what your book can look
like. If you want to print out a page for readability use the
print version in the link and make sure to print it at 100% with
'Fit to Page' turned off.
